[USEN] Advice for Future Leaders

Advice to students from Ulsan Foreign Language Highschool librarian Soohyeon Jeong

On September 19th, Ulsan Student English News (USEN) reporters interviewed Ulsan Foreign Language High School(UFL) librarian, Soohyeon Jeong. Through this interview, let’s take a look at the advice that she wants to give to students!

Q. Hello, thank you for your time. Please introduce yourself.

A. "Hello, I am Soohyeon Jeong, a librarian at UFL.."

Q. What do you think about ‘being a leader in a particular place?’

A. "I think that is being professional and being a pioneer of that field. Leaders have to take one step further than others, and be available to draw their future with insight. Furthermore, you should be a person that leads everybody -- you should have responsibility, insight, and tolerance."

Q.  Is there any book that you want students to read to have the qualities of a leader? If you do, please recommend it.

A. "Leaders need to lead the pack and present a vision. Professional knowledge in the field is basic, and I think the key is to establish good relationships, communicate with people, and lead them. Above all, in order to lead many people, you need to be able to understand and sympathize with various people's situations and views. Reading is important for that. People have their own fixed perspective, probably one that is created according to the position and situation that is given to them in life. However, you can't be a leader just by looking at your own fixed gaze. Your position and situation (nationality, gender, etc.) may not change. In order to have various perspectives and think more broadly, you need to be able to see with other people's eyes. There's a saying, "I see as much as I know!" It is important to experience, think, and understand situations that you do not have. One of the ways to do this is through reading. In order to develop the qualities of a leader, it will be necessary to read leadership-related books, but I hope you will read various books and expand your horizons to see the world.

But I think the question still wants me to recommend some books related to leadership, so I selected some of them.

Q. Finally, please give some words to those students who want to be global leaders in various spheres.

A. "To be a leader, many students only care about their intellect. Of course, knowledge is important, but if you have low ability to understand and sympathize with others, it is difficult to become a leader even if you study well.

◇ Build up your ability to understand various people!

◇ Realize your limitations, break stereotypes and prejudices, and develop the power to see more broadly!

◇ To be a global leader, to be on the stage of the world, you need to be able to embrace more diverse people and a bigger world. To do that, understanding and empathy are the foundation.

◇ Raise your confidence, but be humble! Experience a lot and challenge yourself!

◇ Please fail a lot.

If you embrace these words deeply, they will return to greater growth. Don’t be afraid and I hope you experience many things.”

Many students frequently think that the leadership is born from fate so they struggle to think about themselves in those roles. However, we can be a leader anytime and anywhere, such as leader of team. Hence, as the librarian Soohyeon Jeong said, we have to nuture our own ability to lead.
